I have been thinking a lot about how I want to use media in my GLP. I have a couple of different ideas. First, on my website's home page I plan to have a video of some sorts to explain the project (what's involved) and tips about how to navigate the site (maybe a screencast). For the project itself, students will have the opportunity to use various types of media in order to create their individual projects and classroom projects. Media such as podcasts, video, photos, etc. will be accepted and welcomed. One aspect that I really like about my GLP is the fact that students will be able to use different types of media to express themselves with. I think this will create a unique and interesting GLP.
Through the use of media in my GLP I think students will be guided "From instruction to construction and discovery" and also "From one-size-fits-all to customised learning" Mason & Rennie (2008). No two projects will be the same which I think will be very interesting. I can't wait to see what students end up with.
Hi Amber,
ReplyDeleteI like that you will be using video to explain the project. What program do you think you'll use to do that?
It's also cool that students will be allowed to experiment with different media in their projects. Will you offer tutorials for them (and their teachers) on how to make podcasts/videos/etc?
I'm not sure yet what program I will use to create my video explaining the project. My sister has one of those flip cameras so I will probably use that to record the video.
ReplyDeleteI will probably put links on my sites that will guide students to tutorials that will teach them how to create a video, podcast, etc. Do you have any recommendations for good tutorial sites?
Do you have a webcam on your computer? It might be easiest to download the free CamStudio and make your explanation video straight from your computer. Using a flip camera would be a good choice too.
ReplyDeleteAs for tutorial sites, I think it's going to depend on what programs you are going to have them use. For podcasts you can choose a site to recommend like Podmatic and find tutorials online, but for videos I can see it getting trickier because different classes might have different operating systems or programs available.
I like your choices of Key Characteristics. Having students create their project with computers is definitely "from instruction to construction." What do you think is going to be the hardest part for the student's participating?
CamStudio is a great idea, I will check it out.
ReplyDeleteI think the hardest part for the student's participating will be uploading their projects so I can post to the website. This is a part that I am still figuring out.
Maybe it would work to have them upload their video projects to YouTube or TeacherTube and then message or email you the link to their video. For images, maybe they could post them to a Flickr account and then send you the link.
ReplyDeleteAre you interested in managing the uploading of all your participants projects? What would you think about giving each teacher the responsibility of uploading their own classes projects to a community gallery that they have the password to? Not sure how that would work, but I imagine there is a way. I'll keep your problem in mind and let you know if I think of anything!
